Preacher:- Rev. Gabriel Ajayi

Theme:- “Undefiled Garments”

Notes:-

▪▪> Revelation 3:4… “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.”

Today is a special day because we are going to soak ourselves in the Blood of Jesus. This morning our prayer is that all those who have not gotten their garments will aspire and strive to be saved. You must be born again.

▪▪> Isaiah 61:10… “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”

It is our prayer that every sinner will have the garment of salvation today. It is very simple; acknowledge you are a sinner, repent of your sins, plead the blood of Jesus for forgiveness in faith and it will happen… you will be given that garment of salvation.

This message is also for those who have their garments, that when Jesus comes, He will meet their garments undefiled. To defile is to make something unclean or impure.

A garment of salvation is clean and pure. It should be undefiled. You should not allow anything that will make it unclean or impure stain it. It will take effort. One thing that is clear in our lesson is that nothing less than 100% perfection is acceptable to God. 99.99% is not acceptable. It must be 100%. We see that many of the churches in the lesson (churches in Asia as reported in Revelation) have qualities that we are still striving to attain and yet they could not make it. God’s grace can help us attain 100% perfection.

Another thing that is clear in our lesson of today is that there is no unconditional eternal security. That was the warning God gave to the church of Ephesus (in Rev 2:5). He said he will remove their candlestick from its place. It was also learnt in the lesson that it is possible after losing the axe head to be wielding the axe handle that is to render carnal service after salvation is gone.

▪▪> Revelations 2:2… “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars”

Nothing is hidden to God. Hebrews 4:13 tells us that everything is open and naked in the eyes of Him we have to do. It is also clear in our lesson that one can be self satisfied on the road to hell (Laodicean church). Satan may deceive but may we not deceive ourselves. It is clear in our lesson today that there is hope for the backslider. Five of the churches were backsliders but the Lord sent these letters to retrieve them from the hand of the enemy. Are you a backslider, there is hope for you.

Grace is available for the poor and the weak. That is why the church of Philadelphia and Smyrna made it. The church of Smyrna was poor, the church of Philadelphia had no strength and they made it. By the grace of God, we will make it. It is clear from the lesson that it is possible however polluting our environment may be, we can keep ourselves unspotted.

Another thing that is clear in line with 2 Timothy 2:19 is that the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. God has given us the robe of salvation, the robe of righteousness, we have a responsibility  that is we have a part to play to keep it unspotted and undefiled. This is a lifelong struggle. My brother my sister, the beginning is not the end. It is far easier to start than to end. It is when we end it, we will know if we had even started it. May we not fall by the wayside. Every asset must be maintained and kept. If you don’t maintain a house, it will crumble eventually. If we maintain our assets or whatever is of value to us on earth, so that we can enjoy them for a long while, how much more effort should we make so that our greatest asset (our salvation) is kept safe.

Our greatest asset is our salvation. It is the only asset that has an everlasting value. Our certificates, positions in society, houses etc will not matter when we are dead. The world will pass away and everything in it. The only thing that will matter to you and to me at the end of the day is our salvation. We should make the greatest effort to keep our salvation unblemished and undefiled. We should also note that Satan is working 24/7 to defile us.

▪▪> 1 Peter 5:8-9… “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”

Satan is looking for you to give him a chance so that he can put you into trouble but by the power of God, by the name that transcends all names, he will not have that chance in your life. Satan is doomed and he is looking for people who will be doomed with him but by the grace of God we have left his company and we are not going back there. We have a part to play for this to be so.

▪▪> Revelation 16:15… “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

God will keep us by His grace divine but we have a part to play to keep our garments undefiled and may God help us.

▪▪> Philippians 2:12… “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

Whoever wants to stand, God will give him/her the grace to stand but we must first take our stand no matter what like Joseph who said… “How can I do this and sin against God”. He went through fire but God saw him through. Whatever you may suffer in your effort to keep your garments undefiled, God will see you through. We are not saying that there are no problems/persecution out there but God will see you through. At your workplace, you are expected to compromise. Your stand should be like that of Joseph who said… “How can I do this and sin against God”. It will cost you something. As a female student, your lecturer wants to take advantage of you and your degree may hang on that; you should take your stand and prove your God. No matter what you have to pay, God will see you through. But if God permits you to face the consequence, it is better to fail on earth than to fail in heaven. But by the grace of God, you will not fail. We live in a very polluting environment. Iniquity has abounded. To take our stand will take the grace of God and by the grace of God, we will not join the crowd. God will help us.

How did the church in Sardis manage?

▪▪> Revelation 3:4… “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.”

Even at Pergamos where Satan was dwelling, some people stood their ground? When people want to compromise they say you give what you have to get what you want. That is not for the child of God. We are in the last days but by the grace of God, we will not be overtaken by the spirit of the last days. We will take our stand to keep our garments undefiled. The God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel, Joseph will be our God. We will not compromise.

The songwriter says… “And when you are tempted my brother…when you are tempted my sister, may God give you the grace to say no. We have a part to play.

▪▪> 2 Peter 1:10… “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall”

May our garments not be defiled. Whoever allows his garment to be defiled is wearing a strange garment before God.

▪▪> Zephaniah 1:8… “And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.”

May our garments not be strange before God. There is punishment for that. The tares and wheat are growing together but separation is coming. Now we are singing chorus, there will come a time, everyone will sing solo. God will examine us one by one. There can be no hiding

▪▪> Matthew 22:11-14… “And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:  22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.  22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Our salvation is our wedding garment for the marriage supper of the lamb. We have been called, we have answered the call, may God count us among the chosen. We have a part to play. We must be focused. If we know that our greatest asset, which is our salvation will win us eternal life, we would guide it jealously so that nothing will defile it.

▪▪> Hebrews 12:1-2… “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

There are besetting sins all around us. Let’s face it, we don’t need a great sin to defile our garment, a small sin is enough. To God sin is sin. The tiniest sin will send to hell. May God help us to maintain pure religion that is to keep ourselves unspotted from the world.

We have a part to play to abstain from sin.

▪▪> 1 Peter 2:11… “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul”

May God give us the grace. We have a part to play. We must consecrate. Consecration is when what I ought to do wins the battle of what I want to do. What I ought to do is God’s will, what I want to do is our own will. It is never the will of God that the children of God should go into anything that will defile them.

Today is a special day. It has to be a special day because we don’t know the day when our Lord will come. Maybe this is the last Sunday, we want to deep ourselves into the blood afresh. No matter what might have happened to our garments, God has the capacity to remove the stain. His blood is still efficacious. May we do that before the accuser of the brethren comes.

▪▪> Zachariah 3:1-3… “And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.  3:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?  3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.”

Do not make an excuse. Just come before God. God knows you more than you know yourself. God knows if Jesus comes this moment, you will not go with him. Are you a sinner? Do you need a change of raiment? God will give you a change of raiment and by the grace of God when the Lord comes, you will not be left behind.
